Jesus points out that there are two things happening during a harvest. First, the workers are paid wages today, second those workers build a storehouse of food for tomorrow.
Wages are for today, the day of harvest, so that the worker may eat, live, and prosper. Scripture says “the laborer is worthy of his wages”. When we do work, we are paid. Simple concept. In this scripture the story starts with hunger. The disciples went to buy food. But when they returned, Jesus was no longer hungry. He had already been “paid” wages for witnessing to the Samaritan lady.
This represents us today. When we spend time doing God’s work, He pays us wages of covering our earthly needs. But when we spend time focusing on “buying food”, God does not pay wages, for we are not working for Him then.
Wages from above come when we work for the God of Heaven! We don’t need to demand payment, we simply trust that it will come from such a righteous “boss”.
But then something else is also happening.
The work of harvesting builds a storehouse for the future. Wages are for today, but the harvest is for tomorrow! And an even greater blessing, the harvest will be shared! We live in a day of harvest season that began when Jesus walked among us. Before that, many lived in the day of tilling, sowing, watering, weeding, etc. All these beautiful souls will be with us when we begin to enjoy the harvest.
Think of the party that will be! As the popular song says, “I can only imagine!”. We will stand with Moses, Joshua, Elijah, Adam, Enoch, Ruth, Mary, Gideon, all of the men and women who preceded us. Now THAT is a party!
Don’t fret over today…. If you do the work appointed for you, the Master will pay your wages for today. But rejoice over the day that comes when we will all enjoy the fruit of the harvest!
